Our rich history began with the end of the Blackhawk War of 1832. When this conflict concluded, a new area of northern Illinois was suddenly open for settlement. This area was The Fox River Valley. It was in this pristine location that the Village of West Dundee was founded.
Though influenced by more than a century of growth in the Chicago area, West Dundee lay far enough outside Chicago's direct sphere of influence to forge its own, unique identity based primarily on the local agriculture settlements and neighboring River Valley communities.
Located less than an hour from Chicago, West Dundee grew into a vibrant, yet quaint community that was a world apart from the hustle and bustle of its neighbor to the southeast.
While West Dundee formed its own unique character, it has still embraced the regional growth that was destined for The Fox River Valley. The area's rolling landscapes and open farmland, plus convenient access to Interstate 90, Chicago, Rockford, and O'Hare Airport, make the Village an ideal place to work, live, and play.
The Village of West Dundee, formally incorporated in 1887, is governed by a president and six-member board of trustees. All are elected at-large on a nonpartisan basis for staggered four-year terms. West Dundee employs a full-time manager and well-qualified department heads to oversee the Village's daily business matters and public services. Major areas of operation include: a Public Works Department that houses a water production and distribution system serving more than 1,800 customers; the Police Department; the Fire/Building Department; and other professional support staff. Total Village staff includes more than 55 full-time employees. West Dundee is also serviced by Dundee Township Park District, Dundee Township Library District, and Fox River Water Reclamation District.
As part of the upper Fox River Valley in northern Illinois, West Dundee enjoys one of the region's most unique and treasured assets, the Fox River greenway. The Fox River serves as the Village's eastern border and is quickly becoming one of the community's finest recreational areas. The wonderful Riverwalk plan provides easy access to public walks and parks adjacent to the river.
